Homeopathy is based on the principle that people have a natural capacity for healing themselves.
In the 18th century, a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, became disillusioned with the medical practices of the day. He began to look for a safe, gentle and effective method of healing.
Hahnemann discovered that when he took quinine it gave him the symptoms of malaria. When he gave it to a patient with malaria he found it alleviated the symptoms. He then went on to develop this principle of 'LIKE CURES LIKE' which led to the establishment of modern HOMEOPATHY.
Traditional medical science has not yet been able to explain how Homeopathy works. The remedies seem to act like packets of "information" which the body needs to heal itself but seems to have "forgotten".
In this way, Homeopathy seems to act as a prompt - and support of - the body's own healing powers.
Homeopathy is safe, non- toxic and non- addictive. It is an alternative to potentially harmful drug treatment.
It can be used by anyone of any age for many physical and emotional complaints. It can also help where there is no clear diagnosis but you know there is something wrong.
Homeopathy can help to enhance your general health, wellbeing and energy both on a physical and emotional level.
Homeopaths treat each patient and their illnesses individually. A group of patients with the same disease won't all have the same remedies.
In the consultation the Homeopath will ask questions about your health that you probably haven't been asked by any other health practitioners.
The Homeopath will ask you about your illness and how it affects you, but also about you as a person and your lifestyle. A complete medical history will be taken including your family's health.
Homeopaths believe it is essential to treat the whole person - not just the symptoms.
Patients are generally seen monthly initially, but the frequency of appointments and duration of treatments will depend on the person's health.
The general state of health, how long a person has had their condition, and their lifestyle, will all influence the treatment required.
Most "remedies" are given in small pleasant tasting tablets that you suck and then chew. Your Homeopath will tell you how and when to take your remedies.
Many complementary or "alternative" therapies can be used alongside Homeopathy. This is because they are also based on restoring the body's own natural healing abilities.
Homeopathy will not interfere with other medicines that the doctor might be giving you. Homeopathic treatment can help people to reduce the need for their drugs and many drugs can be withdrawn, but this must be done under the supervision of the Homeopath and GP.
